By not doing this the programmed unit could conflict with the unprogrammed units commands. The Battery in the garage door remote may be too weak to program Homelink. Spent a couple frustrated afternoons trying to get my Acura MDX homelink to open my Liftmaster garage door. I followed the instructions in the manual, but no matter what I would do the garage door wouldn’t open. As it turns out, there are two steps required to get this to work. You have to teach the MDX how to open the garage, AND you have to set the Liftmaster to accept the signal from your MDX.
Within 30 seconds press/hold the Homelink button in your Acura (the one which you just programmed) for 2-3 seconds until the garage opener lights blink. This indicates that Homelink button is linked to the garage door opener.
Get a small step ladder to reach the garage opener unit. Find the training button on the garage opener (in my unit, I was under the cover which protects the light bulb). This should take about 5 seconds. I discovered that the Homelink in my TL is a bit faulty because it took much longer to accomplish this than when programming the Homelink in my MDX. My TL's Homelink may 'unlearn' it's code in the future and the needed proximity of the TL to the garage door may be much closer than desired until I get the Homelink fixed. Do not run the vehicle's engine while programming HomeLink. Exhaust gas can cause serious injury or death. When programming a garage door opener, it is advised to park outside of the garage.

At this point, do may feel tempted to program all 3 buttons on your Homelink so that you do not have to look at which button you press. This might work if you have just one car. If you have multiple cars / transmitters – don’t do it as you may run into a problem: a garage opener with rolling code may have a limit of how many remotes can be linked to it (mine does: after I attempted to program all 3 buttons on my new Acura, a pin-pad remote outside of the garage and HomeLink in my other car stopped working).
Last little bit if you are interested: The only compatible keypad that I've been able to find is one which is proprietary to the manufacturer, and called 'lynx PROLINE KEYPAD'. The only place that I've been able to find selling this item is DEK Canada Strangely enough, I can't find any place that actually sells the Lynx Garage Door Openers brand new? Anyone have any idea if these are actually retailed to consumers?

Watch the indicator light on HomeLink blink slowly (on/off once per second or so) for the first 5-10 seconds and then start blinking rapidly (3-4 times per second).

Realistically, if you live in a complex like place, you program the main gate, then you program the second button as your garage, and you still have a third one to play around with.
Unfortunately the green button (SRT) on the back of my opener does not seem to work. It will not clear codes or anything On the door opener attached to the ceiling by where the wall button wire attaches there should be a 1/4 inch square GREEN button. Push this and it should stay on or flash. Then push the button on the transmitter. The button on the opener should flash, this means it has recorded the transmitter.
