Princess Maker 4 is highly drama-oriented. Throughout the game, there are various event scenes that offer clues about your daughter's past, not to mention the war between humans and non-humans and her demonic roots. This is probably what differentiates it the most from previous PM games.
I played the old version multiple times without cheats, yes. Sure, some of the endings are incredibly difficult to get, but that doesn’t necessarily make it an awful game.

The game has dramatic AdLib music during the intro sequence, and some nice tunes in gameplay. Music runs stable, and has no issues with my non-native soundcard. Gameplay appears to be unforgiving of bad decisions. Judging by the layout of the saved games dialog, where the name of the character is shown for each entry, I feel the authors expect the player to restart many times in order to obtain a desirable outcome. For example, at first it seems like 500 gold is enough money to get 3 rows of schooling, with each costing $30-$50, so that the character can earn more starting with the best possible skills. This strategy doesn't work in this game, and the second attempt at class yields 0 skill, yet time is spent.
If the patcher leads to more sales, the authors will benefit (and maybe consider translating future Princess Maker games.) if it leads to a bunch of lamers warezing it everywhere, it will be a cold day in hell before you see translated PM games.

I kind-of expected a 320*200 px pixellated game. But it runs in full 'super VGA' resolution on my PC. I was pleasantly surprised that it had native input from mouse and keyboard. I could pick items from a grid, but could use the real keyboard to input text. So refreshing after taking a trip through emulators.

Princess Maker 4 is still very similar in terms of features to the other games. There is more choice in the control of her diet, and in fact a little less statistics to go around. The option of choosing to talk to the player's daughter still exists with the added benefit of her talking without the player having to mention a subject to talk about. I’m not sure why it even matters, since there’s only a few ways you can really ‘lose’. Without a walkthrough, you’d probably never even know about half the endings (easy or not) unless you put some serious hours into the game. And it’s not like cheats are gone for good.
Princess Maker 4 - English patch News (April 16th, 2008) - Thanks to everyone who bought stuff from me! I've gone ahead and put the partial translation patch for Princess Maker 1 up for download. This is a patcher to translate the interface for the Japanese PC version of Princess Maker 4 into English. I used to point people at Himeyashop to buy it, but it's gone out of business; you may be able to pick up a used copy somewhere, and sells it (though you'll probably need a shipping service - they don't ship to the US, at least; not sure about the rest of the world.) If anyone has a non-Amazon vendor selling PM4, let me know - IIRC, Amazon US mistreats their employees and their hosting branch practices political censorship, so I'd rather point at someone else. I've tested it against the Memorial Box version; Kirigirisu reports that it works on the standalone version.

It has a simple interface, nice visuals for the time and some of the music is quite pleasant too.
